Concrete floors are awesome for many reasons. They are easy to clean, extremely durable, and stay cool during the long Summers here in Texas. In the case of new construction (slab foundation), the use of a concrete floors actually eliminates the need for additional flooring (such as tile or wood).

When remodeling, oftentimes the original concrete is difficult to embrace as a finished floor, due to the myriad of materials that may have been installed on top of it over the years (i.e., tile, wood, vinyl, carpet, adhesive, paint, etc). These instances are perfect for a concrete overlay (thin coat of concrete floated on top of a primer material), an application my company has used in numerous remodels. But to take it to the next level, we just started using a micro-topping* on top of the overlay material. The micro topping mimics the look of a hand troweled floor, providing increased depth and durability, while making the floor look a lot less monotone than a typical overlay.

*The micro topping can be installed sin overlay material, but if you are attempting to raise your concrete floor to a certain height to flush to an adjacent flooring (as we often do, to eliminate changes in elevation), then floating the floor with an overlay material first is ideal.
